
Adkins was born to a young single mother in several working-class communities of London. Adkins loved listening to modern pop music as a child and learning how to play the clarinet, as well as the guitar. It wasn't until her teens that she was introduced to Etta James, a rhythm-and-blues singerand other musicians in the late 20th century which was when she began thinking about a future career in music. When she was in a secondary school for performing arts, which was funded by the government and a friend began posting songs Adkins had composed on Myspace. After graduation her music caught the attentions of record labels. She got a contract in the year 2006 with XL Recordings.
